Meteorologist Nick Bannin has moved around a lot in his life. He was born in Bristol, England, before soon moving to Manchester, England, where he lived for several years.
At the age of four, Nick’s father’s career took their family to Cincinnati, Ohio. Soon after that move, Nick discovered a fascination with weather, especially the snowy and severe variety. By age 5 he knew he wanted to be a meteorologist and kept that passion through the rest of his life.
After moving back to England for a brief period, Nick found himself spending much of his elementary, middle and high school years in California living in both Cupertino and San Diego.
Nick attended the Ivy League’s Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science while minoring in Applied Economics and Management. Before graduating, Nick became the weekend meteorologist at WETM-TV in nearby Elmira, New York, where he stayed for a little over two years.
Seeking a new challenge and some Nor’easters, Nick went to WWLP-TV in Springfield, Massachusetts where he started as weekend morning meteorologist before becoming the weekday morning and noon meteorologist for the #1 station in the area. In total, he spent 10 years in western Massachusetts and that was where he met his wife, Katerina, while out grabbing interviews for a weather story. They soon had a boy, Luka, who would frequently make on-camera appearances during Nick’s working-from-home period during the pandemic.
While at WWLP-TV, Nick won the First-Place award for Best On-Air Personality from the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association, an AP Award for Best Weather Coverage along with several team Emmy and Regional Murrow awards.
He’s most proud of his coverage of the June 1, 2011 EF-3 Tornado. Along with his weather team, he is credited with saving lives as this rare tornado moved right through downtown Springfield and stayed on the ground for almost 40 miles.
Nick and his family moved to Central Texas in January 2021. As a Brit, Nick spends a lot of his spare time watching Manchester United play soccer in the English Premier League and looks forward to adding Austin FC games to the mix. When he’s not watching soccer, he can be found kicking the ball around with his son or exploring the various parks and restaurants that Austin has to offer.
