GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) - Firefighters were tasked with a stressful and at times very confusing challenge on a hot Tuesday afternoon. But it was exactly the type of challenge they were looking for.
The four-day training at the creative playscape at the San Gabriel Park wrapped up Tuesday. Tight spaces in the playscape gave firefighters the chance to experience what it can feel like to work in a collapsed building.
"Hot, sweaty, tight-fitting, very confined," said trainee Matt Morrow. "(It gives you a chance) to see how good you do, see if you're really claustrophobic or not."
Trainees wearing full gear, weighed down with air tanks, practiced escaping from the confined space blindfolded, using their hands and ears to find a way out.
"A lot of the guys are saying that it's very realistic, there's a lot of tight spaces," said firefighter David England. "It's neat to be able to use a playscape because they've never been through this space before so its unfamiliar territory."
Dragging and pulling themselves through tight spots with the clock ticking, it was an exercise that could one day save their life.
"You literally can't see your hand in front of your face," England said. "You get a little anxiety but this is an opportunity the guys learn to control that emotion if they ever were in a mayday situation fighting for their lives."
