FREDERICKSBURG, Texas (KXAN) - Several roads outside of Fredericksburg were blocked on Friday because of high water, but most didn't seem to mind and were just happy to see the rain.
Many drivers took their chances crossing Old Kerr Highway off Highway 16, one of several low water crossings in and out of the farms and ranches that line river road. Some were just sightseeing.
"We're just checking out the water because it's been so long since we've had any measurable rain," said Cynthia Phillips. "I was just here a couple of days ago...it was completely dry."
Others were practically celebrating.
"Thank God it's all opened up and given us some good relief," said Cameron Phillips. "It's a little inconvenience, but a welcome inconvenience."
The rain had been pounding the Hill Country since Thursday night, shutting down several roads southwest of town.
"I'm liking it," said Luis Rodriguez.. "We need the rain badly here."
Safety personnel preach their 'turn around, don't drown' message, but many locals said the road has been underwater so many times over the years they know when to take their chances, and when to turn around and go home.
