SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - The 23-year-old man wanted in the double-killing of a San Marcos couple Thursday was found dead, police said. His death appeared to be self-inflicted.
Daniel Brewster Stillwell, wanted for the deaths of Hailey Nicholls, 22, and 27-year-old Jesse Robledo, was found dead on Farm to Market 32 in an area of Comal County called "Devil's Backbone" around noon.
Stillwell was described as the ex-boyfriend of Nicholls. She had since begun dating Robledo, authorities said.
Stillwell's car was found rolled off the side of the road, said San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams. "We're not sure exactly whether the collision killed him or if he shot himself, have to wait on autopsy results," the chief told reporters just after 5 p.m. "Either way, it's apparent that he died from self-inflicted injuries."
Police say a gun was found in the car.
The shootings took place around midnight at an apartment at 317 Craddock Ave,, San Marcos. Neighbors told KXAN they heard a verbal and physical fight before shots rang out. Neighbors called police and that's when the two bodies were discovered.
Nicholls and Stillwell were students at Texas State University in San Marcos. All three had worked at a San Marcos restaurant, officials said
Police said that Stillwell broke the apartment unit's glass door with a brick. Stillwell left by car, police said.
"This morning, we knew he was headed out in that direction," Williams said. "We were tracking his cell phone but his cell phone quit working around 2 a.m. today.
Police said Stillwell, who lived in the same complex, called his roommate saying he hurt his girlfriend. Police tracked those calls and knew where to look for him.
"Earlier this morning, we called the Austin Homeland Security to see if they could help us with a chopper to find the car.
Around noon the car was located in Comal County. Deputies found Stillwell dead in his car," the chief said.
College friends wer shocked to learn what happened.
"They were always really nice and never seemed to have problems or anything like that," said Alan Lescokelayeh.
And shocked again to hear Stillwell took his own life.
"It's a small town and everybody kind of knows everybody," Lescokelayeh said. "Once we got the text, we were just surprised and shocked at everything that was going down."
Records show that Stillwell has an address in Houston.
