AUSTIN (KXAN) - It's hot, it's muggy, and it's moist. That's exactly how milfoil, and underwater plant clogging Lake Austin, thrives. With no relief in sight from Mother Nature, the problem is going to get worse.
The Lower Colorado River Authority says the plant is growing out of control on Lake LBJ too.
"We're in the midst of a very severe drought right now," said Bryan Cook with the LCRA. "The conditions are ideal for milfoil growth. Long, hot, sunny days, shallow water, and really low flow all contribute to the milfoil growth."
Rob Troyer and Alex Singleton are friends who have been playing on Lake Austin for many summers, but this year, the underwater growth is getting in the way of their fun.
"It feels real weird against your legs," said Singleton, who likes swimming on the lake. "It gets all up in your legs when you're swimming and it's all over you, it's really weird."
They say weed is invading their favorite spot.
"It's rough, it's hard," Troyer said. "It's got tubes that come up, leaves come off of it."
Christian Garcia says fishing used to be a lot more fun before the weed invasion.
"We go out and throw our lures out hoping we get a fish, but then we reel it back in only to find milfoil," he said. "You think you have a fish on, and you reel it back in and end up being weeds."
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has been wresting with the milfoil problem on Lake Austin for a couple of years. Feeding the waters with weed-eating Asian Carp have only turned up mixed results.
