AUSTIN (KXAN) - One person is dead and several others injured after a head-on collision on Highway 71 at Pace Bend Road , near the Briarcliff area.
Authorities say STARFlight and EMS responded to the scene around 9 p.m. Friday.
Austin-Travis County EMS said two patients were transported via STARFlight to University Medical Center Brackenridge. Three other patients were transported by ground to nearby hospitals.
The Department of Public Safety said 55-year-old Russell Mapes was driving westbound on SH 71 when the car heading eastbound crossed into the westbound lanes and hit Mapes'car.
Mapes died at the scene.
