AUSTIN (KXAN) - Julie Ann Gonzalez has been missing for more than two years, but her name was on the family docket at the Travis County Courthouse on Wednesday.
That's because her family is fighting for visitation rights to see her 4-year-old daughter Layla.
"We want her to see that she has a family that loves her. Mom is not here right now, but the rest of her family is," said Sandra Soto, Julie Ann's mother.
George De La Cruz, the baby's father and Gonzalez's estranged husband, has primary custody of the girl. He has been called a person of interest in Gonzalez's disappearance.
Soto says she has not seen Layla since the first week in March and wants to have a regular visitation schedule.
De La Cruz's attorney Bret Doyal says harassment and accusations from the maternal side of the family have made that difficult.
"We have said all along we aren't trying to alienate that side of the family," said Doyal. "It is just that the hostility is not in the child's best interest."
Police say De La Cruz is not cooperating with the investigation into Gonzalez's disappearance in March of 2010.
The judge in Wednesday's custody hearing said a visitation schedule will be put together, but asked Soto and her family to stop harassing De La Cruz and his family.
Soto says fundraising and search efforts for Gonzalez have slowed down as they have fought to see Layla.
"My focus is my other children and granddaughter. Julie is in God's hands. I have to believe Julie is in God's hands," Soto said.
