KXAN (AUSTIN) - A proposed roadway would connect Austin Bergstrom International Airport and the city of Austin and relieve traffic on U.S. Highway 183. More than 60,000 vehicles use the current stretch each day, and congestion has reached a boiling point.
Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is planning to build a 7.2-mile expressway in the middle of U.S. Highway 183. The project is called the Bergstrom Expressway and would run from U.S. Highway 290 to State Highway 71 in East Austin.
One plan being discussed would include six toll lanes and four- to six frontage road lanes connecting U.S. 290 to SH 71 on U.S. 183. The specific maps are online.
Planners started an environmental impact study in August 2012, and it is expected to be complete in 2015. Construction could begin in 2016 and be complete in 2021 - if the plan is approved.
