AUSTIN (KXAN) - A challenge has made by Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Hexadyne Corporation for local Austin corporations to raise the bar when it comes to supporting the city's World War II Veterans.
Hexadyne, an aerospace and defense supplier for the Austin Police Department, is giving $10,000 to Honor Flight Austin in order to honor World War II veterans in the area.
This 'Honor Flight Gratitude Challenge' encourages local corporations and organizations to match or exceed Hexadyne's donation amount.
The overall challenge is to raise $120,000 with the goal of funding the remaining amount needed to fly 120 veterans to Washington, D.C., to the memorial built in their honor.
Honor Flight Austin is the non-profit organization that will transport the World War II veterans to see the memorial built in their honor.
The challenge ends Aug. 15, 2013, the same day World War II ended in 1945.
Honor Flight Austin supports approximately 1,000 WW II Veterans living in central Texas.
Since Honor Flight Austin's start in 2012, the organization has gone on seven missions and transported 230 World War II veterans to see their dream destinations.
