AUSTIN (KXAN) - Concerned north Austin parents reach out to KXAN, following multiple reports of suspicious people approaching their children.
The reports are coming out of the Brentwood and Crestview neighborhoods. Many incidents are near Brentwood Elementary School.
"It frightens you like crazy," said Nancy Butlin. She's a parent of a third grader at Brentwood Elementary School.
Butlin is one of hundreds of Brentwood Elementary parents talking back and forth on Facebook. They use a page called "Brentwood Moms." It's a lot of mothers, but she says dads also use the page.
Parents share all kinds of information--from PTA meetings to play dates--but the page became especially important over the past few weeks.
"There have been a lot of alerts that have gone out, to let people know what's going on," said Butlin.
Austin Police are handling the reports. They say on September 13th, a man with a beard in red pick up truck offered a child money to get in his car. Then Wednesday, a child told his parents a bald man with a mustache in a white truck approached him.
A letter went home with Brentwood students Thursday
Butlin read from the letter: "A child riding his bike home from school...and was approached...by a man in a truck, asking him to get into the truck."
AISD Police sent patrols to the Brentwood and Crestview area Thursday. Butlin says she wants word to spread beyond just her neighborhood and her child's school.
"My main reason for contacting [KXAN] was because, ok, we get more police presence at Brentwood, guess where these guys are gonna go? They're going to go to another school, where, maybe the parents aren't on the look out," said Butlin.
She wants families to act now.
"I didn't want it to become public after something awful happened," Butlin said.
Austin Police say if you see someone acting suspicious, especially around a school or children, get the best description possible; everything from details about the person's appearance to specifics on their car or truck.
