AUSTIN (KXAN) - The city of Austin is telling a planned Aquarium that crews need to stop what they're doing.
Code compliance confirmed it issued a stop work order Friday afternoon for part of the project in North Austin.
Matthew Christianson, division manager with code compliance, said crews went beyond their permits by pouring concrete.
Aquarium owner Vince Covino gave KXAN a tour of the building Thursday. He believes the crews were allowed to do the work and that he has the permits to continue some demo work.
Covino maintains this will not hold up the aquarium project.
Over the past few months, Covino has also dealt with permitting issues which forced him to move the fish he did have in stock offsite.
Covino says the creatures bound for the Austin Aquarium are getting what they need, despite being offsite for now.
"[The animals get] the exact same level of care from the exact same people here as they would off site," Covino said. "There is no difference in the level of care in the animals, the water testing, the medicines that they receive and so forth doesn't change."
Opponents of the aquarium point to an ongoing investigation by the Oregon Humane Society into another aquarium owned by Vince and and his brother, Ammon Covino in Portland, Ore.
Covino says he takes the accusations seriously and issued this letter.
