AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin resident Nakia, a contestant on "The Voice," is advancing on to the show's third, live-round phase.
Nakia isn't new to performing in front of an audience. He plays with his band, Nakia And The Blues Grifters , but this is the singer's first time performing on such a large scale.
"Being on 'The Voice' is certainly the biggest opportunity I've ever had in my life," said Nakia. "I've never had the opportunity to be on national television in front of millions of viewers. It's been amazing."
America was first introduced to Nakia when he sang coach Cee Lo Green's own "Forget You" during the first blind-audition round. Nakia said he was aware Green would be a coach on the show when he decided to perform the hit song. But that was not the main reason he chose to perform the catchy tune.
He wanted to make sure he sang a song that "was instantly recognizable, that would really ignite the audience and get them excited -- and get the audience at home really excited."
Even if none of the coaches chose to spin their chairs around to face Nakia as he sang—signaling that they wanted to take him on as a member of one of their teams—he wanted his performance to have an impression on everyone else watching.
But two of the show's four coaches did like what they heard and turned to face Nakia during that blind-audition performance. This meant the coaches -- country artist Blake Shelton and Green -- would have to convince Nakia to choose between their individual teams. In the end, Nakia joined Team Cee Lo.
Each of the four teams have been whittled down from eight original members to four advancing members. The only two remaining phases in the competition are the live round and the final round.
This is the first round in which viewers will be able to vote for contestants from each team they want to be in the final round.
"Now it'll be America's turn and Austin's turn to vote to keep me on the show," said Nakia.
The winner of the final round will receive a recording contract, $100,000 and the title of "The Voice."
"The Voice" airs on KXAN Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
