AUSTIN (KXAN) - University of Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz enters his third season on the forty acres with an obvious task, improve the Longhorn defense from last year.
Texas ranked sixth in the Big 12 and 73rd in the nation in scoring defense, allowing more than 29 points per game. On Tuesday, Diaz was asked what he could say to show Texas fans he was the right man for the job.
“There’s nothing I can tell them that’s going to answer that and nobody cares what I have to say any way," he said. "Nothing matters except how we play football this year, nothing else matters, just got to go out and play football.
"Someone’s going to set a ball down, they’re going to snap it and we got to go chase it, we got to hit it hard when we get there and that’s all that matters. Then we do that the first game, its not going to matter, we’ve got to go do that the second game. Nothing matters except what's in front of us, I’m irrelevant in the conversation. We’ve got a bunch of guys that are trying to get better, trying to understand what they’re doing, to play hard and fast so they can chase the ball hard and hit it hard when the get there.”
Diaz is excited about the senior leadership from defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and linebacker Jordan Hicks who both missed significant time with injuries last season.
