AUSTIN (KXAN) - Claire is a 4-year-old Great Dane who has led a tough life.
"She was just curled up in a ball on a blanket," said the Vice President of Big Dog Recue, Inc. "She could barely lift her head. Every time you pet her, you did anything to her, she just bled and bled and bled."
That was more than two weeks ago. Since then, this gentle giant has started the long road to recovery.
When Claire was rescued from a home in Smithville, Tirone said the Bastrop County Shelter Animal Control employee thought she was dead.
Claire is roughly 70 pounds underweight, is heartworm positive, deaf, 75 percent blind and has four skin infections.
The rescue group that saved Claire believes her previous owners were backyard breeders.
Now, Big Dog Rescue, Inc. said they have been told Claire's previous owner won't be facing any charges.
Bastrop County District Attorney's Office was unavailable to answer questions about the case on Friday.
An employee at the Bastrop County Animal Shelter said Claire's case is being investigated.
In the meantime, Claire still has a long and tough road ahead of her before she is ready to have something she's never had -- an owner who loves her.
Claire is still months away from being healthy enough to be adopted.
Big Dog Rescue, Inc. is encouraging people to send letters or emails to the Bastrop District Attorney's Office encouraging them to file charges against Clarie's previous owners.
