ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - There is a new push to bring commuter trains to an abandoned rail line north of Austin.
The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority says the Austin area ranked as the fourth most congested metropolitan area in the country and rail would help.
Austin residents have been using the CapMetro rail for years, and now CTRMA says TxDOT should look into the abandoned MoKan rail line stretching from East Austin into Round Rock and Georgetown as one way to ease traffic.
"I think it's a great idea," said Marie Stolz, who lives in Round Rock. "I think we need to be connected with other areas...it's a must if we want people to stay here when not all the jobs are here."
Others say rail would be great for going out at night and a way to save money on gas.
"I think it's a really good idea," said Whitney Langley. "I know some people that have to get transported back and forth, and I think its good for people that don't have cars.
"It's less money than having to use gas to get all the way back and forth from Austin," Langley added.
'Project Connect', as it's being called, would tie Austin, Round Rock and Georgetown together. The plan is in it's early stages, but the the mobility authority says with Interstate 35 and MoPac topping out with expansion options, rail is one transportation option that can still grow.
