AUSTIN (KXAN) - Walking up their first driveway of the day, Gloria Guzman and her grandson, Isaiah Edwards, discussed the rules of volunteering.
"Make sure you knock loud," Guzman instructed.
This was not her first time volunteering for Meals on Wheels and More . Since her mother is a recipient of the group's services, Guzman said she helps out on the holidays.
"I want him to just like what grandma's doing," she said, smiling at Isaiah. "A role model here. Do just like what I'm doing. Give back."
"I like going with my grandma anywhere," he said. "She gives back to the community, and she's gentle with people."
Knocking on that first door, the pair stepped back and waited for the homeowner to answer. After a bit, the door creaked open.
"Happy Thanksgiving," Guzman exclaimed. "We're from Meals on Wheels with some hot food for you this holiday."
"Why thank you," the woman said, taking the box of food.
"I've got my grandson with me," Guzman told the woman. "He's delivering also. Got up early this morning. He is ready to go."
"He's a handsome young man you've got there," the woman replied before shutting the door.
These volunteers were among the many who delivered more than 500 meals in central Austin Thursday.
By lunchtime, Edwards, 14, said he was ready for his own family's meal but that he was also glad he took the time for this experience.
"The people were so happy that someone stopped by to see them and bring them something," he said, looking at his grandmother. "We'll have to do this again next year."
