HOUSTON (AP) — Officials say Houston's top prosecutor Mike Anderson has died after battling cancer. He was 57.
Joe Stinebaker, a spokesman for Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, said officials were informed that the Harris County District Attorney had died on Friday evening. No information was immediately available on a cause of death.
Anderson took office on January 1. He revealed in May he was being treated for cancer. Anderson's office did not say what type of cancer the district attorney was battling.
Anderson had a long career in law enforcement, working about 30 years as both a prosecutor and a district court judge.
Stinebaker said Gov. Rick Perry would appoint a replacement for Anderson.
