With the clock winding down, a prominent Houston attorney made a final push to grab hold of the coveted "12THMAN" license plate.
With 15 minutes left before the noon deadline, bids stalled at $42,000. The fight was far from over.
In the final minutes, the price skyrocketed before Tony Buzbee pushed through his winning bid of $115,000.
Buzbee, who has represented plaintiffs against oil giant BP and in other high-profile cases, says the plate will be given to an Iraq war veteran he knows.
The 12THMAN plate will be presented to Buzbee during the Texas A&M-Alabama game Saturday.
My Plates, the state customized license plate contractor, auctioned off 10-year rights to the plate. The previous record for a specialty plate was a bid of $25,000 in January for "HOUSTON."
Proceeds from the MyPlates.com 12THMAN Auction benefit Texas A&M University and the General Revenue Fund of Texas. My Plates will donate its share to the university.
