FORT WORTH, Texas (KXAN) - Preston Morrison allowed two hits in eight scoreless innings Thursday as the TCU Horned Frogs opened a Big 12 series with a 5-1 win over the Texas Longhorns. Morrison retired 16 batters in a row for the Horned Frogs (27-25, 11-11) before Mark Payton led off the seventh inning with an infield single.
Thursday's loss, coupled with Texas Tech's 17-4 win over Baylor, assured the Longhorns a last place spot in the Big 12 standings, meaning they will miss out on the conference tournament.
Payton led Texas (26-23, 6-16) with a 2-for-3 night. Parker French took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jantzen Witte and Paul Hendrix had two RBI each for the Horned Frogs.
The Horned Frogs scored in the bottom of the first after Cody Jones laid down a bunt single down third base. He stole second and moved to third on Witte's fly out to left before Hendrix blooped a single to shallow center to score him.
French allowed back-to-back walks in the TCU fifth with one out. Boomer White hit a grounder to third as Erich Weiss retired the runner at second before White singled home Brett Johnson for the Horned Frogs' second run. TCU used three straight doubles as part of a three-run seventh to put the game away.
