BURNET, Texas (KXAN) - The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has opened an investigation into the apparent suicide of a capital murder suspect in the Burnet County Jail over the weekend.
Brandon Wood, the executive director of the jail standards commission, said Monday that his office was notified of the death of Gregory Mark Currie, 30. Currie's body was discovered in his cell Saturday. Burnet County Sheriff W.T. Smith said Currie hanged himself from the shower head with a torn piece of his bed sheet.
Wood said the jail provided his office with relevant information, such as the booking sheet and the suicide-screening form for Currie, who was among three people held in connection with the deaths of two people last week whose bodies were discovered in a burning house.
Juston Aaron Curbow, 34,was also charged with capital murder. Melissa Marie Frink, 33, was Charged with tampering with evidence.
Wood said his investigation will center on whether the Burnet jail adhered the minimal standards set by state law. His office does not conduct criminal investigations. The Texas Rangers have also been asked to examined the matter, Smith said.
In July three former correctional officers at the Burnet County jail were charged with falsifying records after a rapist escaped from the lockup in March. The man was apprehended a few hours later.
