DALLAS, Texas (KXAN) - Country singer Randy Travis was admitted to a Texas hospital and is listed in critical condition.
According to a news release, the Grammy award winning artist is suffering from complications of viral cardiomyopathy, a heart condition caused by a virus.
He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
Travis is best known for "Three Wooden Crosses" and "Forever and Ever, Amen."
In recent years, the 54-year-old country singer has been in trouble with the law. In January , Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated. In that case, Travis was found naked in his Grand Am after a crash.
Investigators said Travis was combative and had a blood alcohol level of .15. The legal limit for driving is .08.
The new ailment facing Travis may or may not have to do with his lifestyle.
The Mayo Clinic says there are several causes of cardiomyopathy, which weakens and enlarges the heart, including excessive use of alcohol over many years and drug use.
Causes can also range from long-term high blood pressure to heart valve problems. The news release did not go into details about the illness.
The Mayo Clinic does say cardiomyopathy can be treated.
