WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - New evidence from The Travis County district attorney's office prompted Michael Morton's defense attorney to call for his immediate release at a hearing in Williamson County on Monday.
What was in the new evidence has not been made public during the hearing before Visting Judge Sid Harle. but involves a pending case in Travis County
"As was revealed in Williamson County, the Travis County District Attorney's office has a pending criminal investigation," Travis County Assistant District Attorney Buddy Meyer said after the court action. "Because of our legal and ethical obligations, we disclosed information in that investigation to Judge Harle."
Attorneys from both sides were given time to review the new documents in private Monday afternoon.
Morton is in prison serving a life sentence for the 1986 death of his wife.
DNA evidence from the original case is under review and could prove that Morton is innocent of the crime according to Barry Scheck, co-director of the Innocence Project .
Morton's attorneys contend that a bandana linked to the Georgetown crime scene does not match Morton.
