Austin KXAN - The day honors the thousands of animals abused and neglected in puppy mills and commemorates animals that have been rescued.
The goal of the event is to shed light on the serious issue of Puppy Mills. Many of these mills across the country use female and male dogs until they can no longer produce puppies.
Carol Araneo-Mayer, co-founder of national Puppy Mill Awareness Day says the dogs are viewed as 'products'.
Once the 'product' can no longer be used, they are killed. Around 11,000 animals die in these mills every day.
Araneo-Mayer encourages people to stop buying puppies from pet shops and to buy dogs from a reputable breeder.
The Puppy Mill Awareness Day will take place at the Fiesta Gardens at 2101 Jesse E. Segovia St. In East Austin lasting from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will be over 50 vendors at the event representing various rescue groups, and shelters.
Make sure you also stop by and say hi to our KXAN mascot Kaxan and Jim Spencer. They will be there all day!
