BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - Police in Bastrop are warning motorists of someone impersonating a public servant.
Officers say a woman was driving east on Highway 71 on Friday night when a beige, four-door sedan began tailgating her vehicle. The car later activated a red flashing light located on the driver's side roof, police said.
The woman continued driving and turned into the Buc-ee's parking lot off Highway 95. The following car then turned off the red light and sped away from the scene.
Bastrop police later confirmed with dispatchers that no police officer in an unmarked car was attempting to stop the car.
Police say if you are confronted with a similar situation and are unsure if you are being pulled over by official law enforcement personnel, do not stop in any secluded areas. Authorities recommend continuing on at the speed limit and finding a well-lighted parking lot or a place with pedestrian activity.
"It is better to explain your actions to a legitimate law enforcement official then to become a victim," Bastrop police said.
