AUSTIN (KXAN) - A six-inch water main break caused a backup in South Austin on Friday.
The main broke in the middle of the intersection at 1st Street and St. Elmo, shutting down traffic through the area.
Cars are being routed around the intersection, which caused a major backlog during the evening commute.
According to Austin Water Utility, there is a tangle of water and gas lines in the area, so crews are working carefully to not disrupt any of the other pipes.
St. Elmo's Elementary School is the only customer that does not have water service at this time.
Repairs to the pipe are expected to be completed Friday night.
