AUSTIN (KXAN) - As police on Monday continued to look for whoever hit two women on bicycles and fled the scene the day before, one Austin bicyclist said the dangers for two-wheelers seem to be getting worse.
Sabrina Must said drivers are not paying attention to cyclists on the side of the road. In fact, she said, often drivers actually seem frustrated with them.
"A lot of times I will catch up to a car at a red light because they'll cut me off and I’ll just tap on their window and say you're going kill me."
The women who were injured Sunday night in the 1000 block of South First Street were said to be in their 20s The car did not stop, and has not been located.
One of the victims in this latest hit and run was wearing a helmet. The other was not. Both were legally riding on the street and were in the far right lane.
Alvaro Bastidas is the founder of Please BE KIND to Cyclists; a group that aims at making Austin as bike friendly as possible. He says he's working with police to make that area safer-even going as far as putting officers undercover on bikes. "There are cyclists out there who are cops and they are working to get aggressive drivers, Bastidas said.
Both victims suffered some non life threatening injuries and are expected to be ok.
Austin police say the car is described as a white or beige sedan, possibly missing a mirror and it was last seen going northbound on South First Street.
