AUSTIN (KXAN) - A fight that broke out in downtown Austin in the early morning hours of Easter Sunday turned deadly. Police say a group of people shot at a man, killing him. Police do not have any suspects in custody.
Police say the fight was between two groups of people. It broke out around 3:00 a.m. near the intersection of Trinity and East 11th Streets. Then, someone pulled a gun and fired. Officers performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived and took him to UMC Brackenridge, where he died.
Darrion Dozier woke up to the news Easter Sunday. He couldn't believe his friend, 23-year-old Bennie Heslip, was the victim of a shooting in downtown Austin and dead.
"I was pretty heartbroken," Dozier said, "I've known Bennie for quite a few years. I met him through his cousin. We were on the same track team."
Candles, flowers, and notes now sit on the corner of Trinity and East 11th, as a way to remember the young man killed. Dozier says his friend's death really set in when he was out shopping Sunday. Heslip worked at shoe store in Round Rock.
"Every time I pass by, I always see his face. So, passing by it and not seeing him--this is reality now, you know?" said Dozier
Dozier describes his friend as humble and motivated.
"He was a workaholic. He was always working. Right now, he had two jobs. Work was a big part of his life," said Dozier.
As police continue looking for more answers and searching for the shooter and others involved, friends are left questioning how and why this had to happen.
"With all the chaos that does happen downtown around this time this weekend, it's kind of just a bad place, bad time," Dozier said.
Police don't have much of a suspect description to go on. They're looking for three women and one man who are believed to be involved in the shooting. The four were last seen in a black four-door sedan driving East on East 11th street toward I-35.
Investigators are interviewing witnesses, trying to piece together what led to the fatal shooting.
