AUSTIN (KXAN) - The rain is here! After a long, dry spell, widespread rain and thunderstorms are in our forecast beginning Thursday.
Downtown Austin got a short burst of very welcome rain just after 11 a.m.
The last time it rained at Camp Mabry was Aug. 18, when the area got 1.21 inches. The last time it rained at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was Aug. 26, when the area saw 0.17 of an inch.
Still, the area is behind at 1.46 inches for the month.
The KXAN First Warning Weather Team has kept a detailed weather diary that provides a snapshot of how the day compares to years before on that same day.
For the past two years, this date has seen no rain at all, but 2009 did see trace amounts after an early morning storm dumped scattered and light rain showers that faded out after sunset.

Rain will remain possible through early Sunday, as a slow-moving, upper-level storm system first stalls over the Texas/New Mexico border, then slowly moves across the state this weekend.
Rain totals of 1.5- to 3 inches will be possible during this period.
This system will be accompanied by a cold front which will sweep across the area Thursday, leaving behind cooler-than-average temperatures through the weekend.
Highs are only expected to reach the 80s Friday through Sunday, and could even be cooler in some areas, where rainfall is more persistent.
The rain should end by Sunday morning as the system tracks east of our area. Temperatures will return to normal, with highs back into the low 90s by Monday.
