AUSTIN (KXAN) - Although fans of the Austin City Limits Music Festival were disappointed about the cancelation of the event Sunday, the rain that stopped the music could help the grass.
"I think [the water might help]," said Charles Vaclavik with the Austin Park and Recreation Department. "The traffic wasn't on there when it rained or after it rained. So really, we were going to water it anyway."
Vaclavik says a drainage system installed in 2010 performed the way it should have. He says in the past a half inch of rain would have caused flooding. This weekend some areas got more than 12 inches of rain.
"Any system you put in is not going to handle that much rain so therefore you saw all the ponding and the flooding in the Great Lawn," Vaclavik said. "That resulted in having to get sump pumps in there and actually pump it out."
"I'm out on my morning walk. Every Sunday morning down through here," said Ken Russell, who lives near Zilker Park.
Russell's walk was a wet one this weekend.
"When they graded the park they didn't quite get it right and so I've driven through there many times after rains and there's a huge puddle that should have gone to the creek," Russell said.
The cancellation of the ACL festival also meant music fans were not dancing on the lawn when it was at it's wettest.
Vaclavik says the city will evaluate the lawn and it should have plenty of time to dry before the Trail of Lights.
