LAKEWAY, Texas (KXAN) - Low lake levels caused by the ongoing drought have forced the closure of every public boat ramp on Lake Travis. But as lake access decreases, more residents are keeping their boats in marinas so they can still enjoy the water.
"I bought my property here near Lake Travis and built my home here so that I could have access to the lake, and do stuff like jet skiing," Caron Colvett, a Lakeway resident, said.
But since Caron moved in, three years of drought have left public boat ramps dry, Lakeway coves littered with beached docks, and the personal watercraft she trailers to the lake collecting dust.
"It's been kind of sad," Colvett said. "I've been gardening a lot [laughter]."
One alternative for residents facing the same problem is to rent a slip at a marina and keep your watercraft there. Depending on the size of the boat, this will set you back an average of $300 per month.
"There is a cost involved, and it's going to be more than just accessing the county parks," Greg Buck, General Manager of the Sail and Ski Yacht Club , said. "But if you haven't been able to use your boat all season and want to use it, a lot of people are saying hey – it's worth it."
A lot of people indeed – as several Lake Travis marinas we checked with said they have noticed an increase in slip rentals this summer over last, when lake levels were higher.
"I would probably start to think about it if the drought goes on much longer," Colvett said.
But for now, Caron is content with waiting.
"I enjoy living here," Colvett said. "I obviously miss the lake, but I don't think it's a deal-breaker for me."
As of Monday evening, the level of Lake Travis was 624.09 feet above sea level. One year ago, the lake level stood at 638.64 feet above sea level.
