AUSTIN (KXAN) - Traffic troubles greet the school year in Northwest Austin.
Leander Independent School District parents are looking for a fix near Vandegrift High School and Four Points Middle School.
Right now, McNeil Drive is the only road leading in and out of those schools, so some parents are fighting to get a new road built.
"It is a very congested area, and the infrastructure isn't set up for this many people coming and going, especially in the mornings and afternoon," said Veronica Sopher, executive director of Community Relations with Leander ISD.
Leander School Board President Pamela Waggoner wants to change that by building a new road behind the schools.
"There are power lines back there, and what we are proposing is a road that is already built back there," said Waggoner. "It needs improvements to meet all of the environmental needs."
Any development in that area needs approval from the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan.
Supporters of the road believe it could help prevent accidents by reducing the number of cars trying to get on RM 2222 to access the schools.
"The odds are not good that we won't have a tragedy happen to one of our students, teachers, or staff, and I just can't sit around and wait for that to happen," said Waggoner.
A fire station is located at the entrance to the proposed new road. Getting it built would mean easier access to the school in case of an emergency.
"The most important thing is the safety," said Waggoner.
The Leander school board president formed the Four Points Traffic Committee to try and gather support. The next meeting with the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan is Sept. 4.
