AUSTIN (KXAN) - A teen who had just been shot managed to escape the man who shot him by running to a neighbor's yard. Daniel Kinchion, 17, was shot by a homeowner after allegedly attempting to break into his home.
Kinchion ran to 69-year-old Rita Copeland's yard where he screamed for help, and said he feared he was going to die.
When Copeland heard Kinchion she rushed outside to help him. Copeland assured Kinchion he would get the medical attention he needed and he would be all right.
But, the help Copeland provided the wounded teen may have cost the retired nurse her own life.
"He's said, 'I'm dying, I'm dying I've been shot,'" Copeland's neighbor, Dot Foy, said. "She says, 'well, you're not going to die. But come on with me and I'll get help for you.'"
Foy spoke to Copeland after the suspect was taken away.
But later that night, the 69-year-old Copeland began suffering chest pains. A neighbor took her to the hospital, where she died at 2:30 a.m. Monday.
"It's such a loss to this neighborhood," Foy said. "She was our anchor. She was the nurse. You went to her if you had a cut or a scratch."
Meanwhile, Kinchion was charged with second-degree felony charges of burglary to a habitation. The 16-year-old who was with him is in custody at a juvenile facility, police said.
The homeowner who shot him will not be prosecuted.
Police said the intruders were inside a screened-in porch attempting to open a glass door when the homeowner fired through the glass.
Officials said at least four home burglaries were reported in the last month in that same neighborhood. Since the beginning of the year, 15 break-ins have been reported.
The shooting took place in North Austin between U.S. Highway 183 and Peyton Gin Road. At least one of the two intruders was wounded.
