AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Independent School District officials tell KXAN they are still trying to figure out how a 4-year-old student at JJ Pickle Elementary school was able to get away.
The young girl wandered away from school and was found three blocks away near the intersection of Providence and St. John's avenues.
A passing firefighter heading to an unrelated incident radioed to a dispatcher the girl was "standing in the middle of St. John's" before a citizen moved her out of the street.
The man who ran out from his home and picked the girl up says car horns were honking and that got his attention.
"I looked out my blinds, and I see this child right in the middle of Saint John's," said Martin Lopez, "I just dropped what I was doing."
Lopez hadn't run in weeks. He is recovering from knee surgery. But that didn't stop him.
"I didn't think I could run, but I ran out I called her. I said, 'Come over here!' She came over to me, I grabbed her and pulled her out of the street," said Lopez.
By the time police arrived, the girl was out of the road, in the care of Martin Lopez. He let her sit on his porch in the shade and gave her water to drink.
After Lopez and police talked to the girl, they determined she had walked away from school. She was even wearing a name tag on her shirt.
An APD officer then drove her back to elementary and left the girl with school authorities.
AISD says the school immediately notified the girl's father. They tell KXAN this incident is "unacceptable."
KXAN went to the school Thursday afternoon soon before school let out and spoke with the assistant principal. She said the school had not been made aware of the situation.
