AUSTIN (KXAN) - Around 20 Austin firefighters will participate in habitat restoration burns and wildfire mitigation training at the Decker Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in East Austin this week.
Prescribed burns will be ignited within approximately 130 acres at the south end of the 320-acre peninsula on the Walter E. Long Reservoir and emergency vehicles will be entering the Decker Creek Power Station between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday through Friday.
All prescribed burns will be extinguished by 5 p.m., with the fires being monitored by firefighters overnight.
AFD is using the event as an interagency training opportunity.
The Austin Fire Department, Austin Energy and the Austin Parks and Recreation Department environmental staff will provide oversight and support for the exercise, which will be conducted in conjunction with the PARD's Prescribed Burn Plan for the site.
The plan aims to promote habitat restoration with periodic burns to reduce woody species encroachment and improve the health of vegetation on the property.
