AUSTIN (KXAN) - A piece of torn fingernail has led to an arrest in the killing of 19-year-old Reynaldo Ortega.
Ortega was robbed and killed April 10 in the parking lot of the Cameron Greens apartment where he lived.
Police said Wednesday that 21-year-old Drexell Washington shot and killed Ortega after a struggle inside Ortega's parked car.
The break in the case came five days after the killing when Ortega's brother was cleaning the car. Detectives had already looked through the car for evidence and released it to Ortega's brother.
However, the brother found a piece of torn fingernail that did not belong to Reynaldo. He notified police and DNA analysis connected the fingernail to Washington who already had a profile in a DNA database.
Police say Washington matches the description they released from witness interviews and surveillance video.
Another man was also robbed the same night and in the same parking lot where Ortega was killed.
