AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Circuit of The Americas hosted the World Endurance Championships (WEC) Sunday. It's part of the International Sports Car Weekend.
Events started Friday and came to a close Sunday evening. The weekend's races kicked off the season at COTA.
The biggest race comes in November--the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix. Last year, 117,000 people packed in for the final day of racing, and the event generated some $191 million worth in advertising for Austin.
You couldn't have asked for a better day for the WEC.
"The weather's nice. It's not as hot as it was for the Australian V8s," said race fan Brian Broderick.
Fans both new to the racetrack and seasoned pros enjoyed the WEC Sunday and the entire International Sports Car Weekend.
"I think there's multiple classes going on today, but, not really sure," said first time track visitor, Chris Owens.
"I've been out for the Formula One, the MotoGP, Australian V8s and Continental Tire," said Broderick.
WEC is an endurance race. It lasts six hours. But race fans say the action never slows down.
"There's constantly passing and aggressive racing going on even though it's six hours," said Broderick.
GT Ferraris, Porsches--and the like--thrilled fans of all ages.
"I like to see all the cool cars, and I like to see how their style is and everything," said Rick Murray, a 14-year-old race fan from Houston.
As we count down the days until the next U.S. Grand Prix, here's a look at last year's race by the numbers.
