AUSTIN (KXAN) - The man charged in the hit-and-run crash that injured former University of Texas soccer player Kylie Doniak was convicted Thursday of two counts of failure to stop and render aid and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The defendant, Nicholas Colunga, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to intoxication assault.
Doniak was badly injured in February 2012 crash in Downtown Austin said Wednesday in court that she has no recollection of the crash or of the harrowing days that followed.
"No, I don't remember anything about a hospital at all. And I don't remember even my rehab," Kylie Doniak told jurors on the second day of the trial of Nicholas Colunga.
Colunga pleaded guilty on Tuesday to intoxication assault. Prosecutors are seeking to convict him on two counts of failure to stop and render aid and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Lori Doniak testified about seeing her injured daughter for the first time after the crash and how she needed help to keep breathing.
"She was on the ventilator." Lori Doniak said "She had tubes everywhere coming out of her head. she was on the ventilator just laying there. Non-responsive at all."
But "little by little," she added, her daughter "started coming around and opening her eyes a little bit."
Since the crash, Doniak has a rod in one leg and challenges with her memory. But she said she is determined to finish school.
"Just school and working out," said Doniak, who was 21 when she was injured. "I don't know. That's kind of the life I love, and I've lived my whole life like that so that's what I'm used to."
