LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) - Without power since Sunday, the crippled Carnival Triumph cruise ship is expected to reach the port in Mobile sometime Thursday afternoon.
There are 3,100 passengers and a crew of 1,100 onboard.
In Leander, Lanette Jackson is anxiously waiting to hear from her son Vernon and his fiance Kim.
She last heard from Vernon on Sunday.
"He texted a short message saying we're stranded, we're stuck at sea, I'm okay," Jackson said.
She has heard about the deplorable conditions on the ship, hot and dirty with overflowing toilets and limited food.
"I started hearing on the news the situation going on, I wonder how are these people surviving."
Lanette says Vernon and Kim got their passage on the ship by winning a contest at their apartment complex.
Now, she is counting the hours. "I'm going to talk to my son, and to Kim. I want to hear his voice, I want to hear that he is okay."
Two weeks ago, Rudy Apodaca of Cedar Park, was aboard the cruise ship when it had engine problems, delaying its arrival in Cozumel.
The troubles continued on the way back to Galveston.
"The captain came back on the PA system and indicated they were still having engine problems," he said. "Therefore it was going to delay the arrival time in Galveston."
They were six hours late getting back and limped into port with the help of tugboats.
"They might have thought they fixed the problem," Apodaca said, "but my guess would be that they did not."
Carnival Cruise Line says it does not believe this week's trouble is related to any previous incidents.
