Body found in Barton Creek identified as missing swimmer

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Authorities found a body in Barton Creek Tuesday afternoon after searching for a missing swimmer Monday.

The Austin Police Department says Ceazar Kainz, 24, was swimming around Sculpture Falls in the Barton Creek Greenbelt area with some friends when his friends reported him missing around 5:30 p.m. Kainz' friends told authorities Kainz decided to stay behind after they got out but when they went back to get him, he was gone.

Numerous emergency crews, including STAR Flight, searched for several hours on Monday evening but they never found Kainz. The search was suspended around 7:30 p.m. Friends say Kainz was a certified lifeguard and worked at Barton Springs Pool.

The Austin Fire Department says it, along with the Parks Department, resumed the search for Kainz on Tuesday afternoon. Around 3 p.m., emergency crews found a body in Barton Creek in the general area where Kainz was reported missing. Tuesday evening, the medical examiner's office confirmed Kainz was the victim.

The Barton Creek Greenbelt is still closed after recent flooding. The Austin parks ground manager said earlier Monday different parts of the trail could take from three days to a couple of weeks to reopen.

Dozens of cars were lining the S. MoPac Expressway service road and people were walking past emergency vehicles on their way to the creek with towels and swimsuits, according to KXAN's Erin Cargile, at the scene.
