AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Austin City Council on Thursday will consider annexing the land within the Formula One track project in southeast Travis County.
The proposed annexation involves more than 1,500 acres.
While the move would bring in big bucks for Austin, it could mean others will lose money. So, some controversy surrounds the decision.
Annexing the area surrounding the Circuit of the Americas Formula One racetrack could bring thousands of dollars in tax revenue to the city of Austin.
But it is the same money that would be taken out of the pockets of Emergency Service District No. 11;the chief says up $1 million.
The annexation area is currently in the city's "extraterritorial jurisdiction." It is 1,584 acres in southeast Travis County in the Elroy community.
Elroy Neighborhood Association President Cathy Olive said the community is seeing a lot of negative effects from the CoTA track.
She does say, with a hint of sarcasm, one benefit of Austin annexing the land would be the ability to file noise complaints.
"I asked the council if they annexed the CoTA land, could we call 311 and complain about the noise, since Austin has a noise ordinance and Travis County does not," Oliver said. "And one council member responded and said that's a very good question, and she had several staff members write me back and basically say, yes, we can complain about the noise."
The chief at ESD 11 asked county commissioners for financial support in the event of annexation, saying his emergency services would lose money in the deal, while being asked to cover the same area.
Commissioners agreed, but it will take similar support from the city. The chief said he'll be making the same proposal to Austin City Council members Thursday.
