AUSTIN (KXAN) - Summer days at your neighborhood pool, a favorite pastime for many of us. The City of Austin's Parks and Recreation Department is figuring out how to keep its pools up and running.
"This pool is the heart of our neighborhood," said Alison Young about Shipe pool in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
Kids learn to swim and dive and make friends and memories at their neighborhood pool.
"It's an incredible way to get your kids out, and say, 'Walk down to the pool, or ride down to the pool.' It's safe. It's convenient," said Young.
Shipe pool has been around since 1938. It's one of Austin's oldest. The Parks and Recreation Department is taking a look at the nearly 50 city pools, some just as old.
They hired an outside company to assess the conditions and needs of each pool.
"Essentially we're paying them to come here and really get the nuts and bolts of this," said Tom Nelson, the Aquatics Division Manager of the Parks and Recreation Department.
That company also designs and builds pools, but Nelson says it won't be a conflict of interest.
"We're not using that company to work on the pools as well," said Nelson.
The Aquatics Division is also holding public meetings to get input. Wednesday, Nelson said they have no intention of shutting any pools down.
Shipe pool and a few others nearly closed a couple of years ago.
"We would like for neighborhood pools to be upgraded, repaired and modernized," said Young. "We don't ask for much, we just want our pools to stay open."
There's another public meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Dove Springs Recreational Center in southeast Austin.
The city will hold additional meetings for more public input.
