AUSTIN (KXAN) - The experimental drug being sought by an Austin cancer patient is showing promising results, the pharmaceutical company BioMarin said over the weekend.
Results for the drug, BMN 673, were presented at the European Cancer Congress in the Netherlands. About half of the patients in the breast cancer tests were stable or showed improvement, BioMarin said.
"We are encouraged by the data presented at the European Cancer Congress, including the safety profile, and significant anti-tumor activity," said Hank Fuchs, BioMarin's chief medical officer.
Andrea Sloan, who heads the Austin-based Texas Advocacy Project, has exhausted her treatment options for ovarian cancer. She has asked BioMarin to allow her access to BMN 673 under what's called a compassionate-use exemption because she was too late to apply for a clinical trial.
BioMarin does not have a compassionate use policy. Sloan is the center of an online effort to persuade BioMarin to allow her access to the drug.
Last week, she made a direct plea to the CEO of the drug company.
"I do have to tell you that I'm a little frustrated at our inability to have an open dialog about how we might be able to get to a solution," Sloan said, "that both advances your goals of making sure that this treatment available to everyone and advances my goal of saving my life."
