AUSTIN (KXAN) - An Austin man is dead after falling off an overlook by the Pennybacker Bridge in West Austin on Sunday evening.
The Austin Fire Department responded to the call around 8 p.m.
Emergency officials said the man was watching the sun set with family when he slipped and fell about 60 feet to a ledge.
Special units were called to the scene to access the man, who was stuck near rocks and debris near Lake Austin. Witnesses on the scene said they heard screams for help.
"We just heard somebody up there on the lookout go, 'Help! Help! Help!'" said Andres Zamora, who saw the accident happen. "But yeah, somebody fell from the top of the thing. That's what we heard, and that's what we saw."
Authorities said the man, who is believed to be in his mid 60s, was alive after the fall.
STARFlight transported the man across the lake to a second location so first responders could treat him. The first responders performed CPR on the man but were unable to revive him.
Late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, a light band of freezing drizzle traversed the I-35 corridor eastward. With sub-freezing temperatures, even the light precipitation created major problems.
