AUSTIN (KXAN) - At overcrowded Bowie High School Wednesday, AISD pitched it's largest bond proposal ever, with just weeks to go before the May 11 vote. It is the first of two public presentations the district plans.
The record bond proposal totals $892 million, with four different propositions in it.
One of the proposals is for a new high school in the fast growing south Austin area, where both Bowie and Akins High Schools are over capacity.
Other AISD schools are also overcrowded, such as Doss Elementary in northwest Austin. Doss is at double capacity and now uses ten portable buildings to handle the students.
Proposition One includes $140.5 million for new science and tech labs, new buses and improving clean energy conservation.
Proposition Two covers $234 million for new schools, upgraded safety and security, and improved arts and athletics.
Proposition Three includes $349 million to repair and renovate older schools, renovate libraries and upgrade campuses.
Proposition Four has $168 million to upgrade facilities for career and tech education, arts, special education and renovating Ridgeview, a school for young men.
If all four propositions pass it would raise taxes for property owners an average of $70 a year.
