AUSTIN (KXAN) - People living along Montopolis Drive in Southeast Austin are praising a new crossing light at Montopolis and Fairway.
Neighborhood groups had concerns about increased traffic. A motorcyclist also died after a crash in the area last year.
Susana Almanza, the Montopolis Neighborhood Association president, helped lobby the city to get the new crossing installed.
"When you think about having to run against traffic and hoping you make it and don't get hit, then you really appreciate a crosswalk in your community," says Almanza. "And especially here where we do have so many children and elderly."
Austin police commander Fred Fletcher called the changes a grassroots, neighborhood project. The goal: to keep families and the community safe.
"It looked like the old game Frogger (when pedestrians tried to cross before the signals)," says Fletcher. "Traffic has gotten really busy here as the population of Austin has increased and it was very, very hazardous and dangerous for people to cross."
The Austin Transportation Department says crossings such as the one on Montopolis cost about $60,000.
