AUSTIN (KXAN) - There's a new health care facility that will soon open in Austin designed for women who have breast cancer.
KXAN went on an inside tour of what will be the Seton Breast Care Center and learned what will make it different -- not just for patients, but their families too.
Four months into construction, the Seton Breast Care Center is slowly taking shape. It's part of the campus of Seton Medical Center Austin in the central part of the city and its purpose is take care of breast cancer patients and their families each step along the way.
"We designed a space -- and a team -- and a service that will deliver the most complex care for the patient in the context for what that person needs medically, spiritually, emotionally and what their family needs," said Kate Henderson, the Central Group of Hospitals president.call it "person-centered care."
The center is expected to be complete in January and patients will come in later that month. The center is part of the overall $48 million expansion planned at Seton Medical Center Austin.
Seton calls the new center a one-stop shop for all of a patient's needs with physicians and staff meeting regularly to navigate the patient's path.
Sandy Miller, the network director for clinical oncology, has seen patients struggle with breast cancer. She said this new type of care will offer a new level of support.
"It's a little bit overwhelming," Miller said. "It's a dream come true -- .a long time in the making. I think about the patients that we will serve here, the lives we will change here."
