Burglars target expensive Magic the Gathering cards

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Owners of an Austin gaming store are still checking their inventory after a burglary left them with a severely reduced stock. It happened around 1 a.m. Sunday at Pat's Games on Hancock Drive.

According to store owner Pat Johnson, two men broke into the store and stole approximately $75,000 worth of the card game Magic the Gathering. Johnson says the store's front door was ripped off with a water meter turn-off key.

"We feel that he's a Magic player, and we know that he's been in the store before because it only took him 20 seconds to go in and find our highest-dollared cards," says Johnson. All the cards that were stolen were housed in three cases.

Surveillance video shows two men coming up to the store. One person had on a medical mask, hoodie and gloves. The second suspect was seen wearing camouflage clothes and he didn't have anything over his face.

"We did put the pictures out on Facebook, Reddit, everywhere we can-it's kind of going viral on the internet-hoping someone will recognize the guy," says Johnson.

The cards themselves, some of which can be very rare and valued from several hundred to several thousand dollars, typically sell in packs for less than $10.

Austin police are investigating.
