AUSTIN (KXAN) - A truckload of puppies arrived at the Austin Humane Society on Monday.
Thirty dogs, including 27 puppies, were rescued from a property in the greater Central Texas area and brought to the shelter in north Austin to be treated and processed.
"All seem in relatively good health," said shelter manager Sarah Streif. "Vets will take a look to make sure of that, but they seem in good shape."
Most of the dogs appeared to be Labrador retriever mixes.
AHS says the dogs were rescued from a property owner who was taking in dogs in an effort to save them, but got overwhelmed.
"It starts out with just a few," said Streif. "Unfortunately, in this circumstance, it doesn't appear dogs had proper veterinary care."
Water bowls had algae growing in it according to the staff that helped rescue the dogs. And although they did have food, they were likely not receiving the type of love and car a typical domesticated dog would receive.
Once they arrived at the Austin Humane Society Shelter, a team of vets and volunteers helped administer vaccines, flea control, and other health screens.
Streif believes nearly all the dogs will be healthy enough to adopt.
"If they have any fleas or ticks, we will treat all that. We make sure they are in good health, spay and neuter them all, and then they are available for adoption."
