The blue sucker fish is native to the lower Colorado River and needs fast moving water to survive. Something it's not seeing in the midst of our drought. Since 1992, the LCRA has been required to release extra water for the Blue sucker's habitat that stretches from Bastrop to Eagle Lake.
The extra water is a bonus for the Bastrop River Company. Lee Harle started the Bastrop River Co. last year. Set right on the Colorado River, it's prime kayaking real estate.
"For our purposes for recreation and kayaks, they aren't dragging bottom even when it's low but with a little bit of help with the water coming out of the dams, it does increase our flow rate," said Lee Harle, owner and operator of the Bastrop River Co. "It decreases the amount of work our customers have to do paddling down the river. It allows them to enjoy some of the open flat water areas a little bit better."
