AUSTIN (AP) - State lawmakers are turning the tables on an investigative unit with a long record of holding elected officials accountable for corruption.
In a bill sent to the governor Sunday, legislators instructed the state ethics commission to study the work of the Travis County district attorney's public integrity unit. The unit has handled prominent cases against officials including former Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom Delay. Republicans have long held that the district attorneys in charge of the office choose cases unfairly to please left-leaning voters in Austin.
Democratic Sen. John Whitmire accused his Republican colleagues of taking advantage of the drunk driving arrest of current district attorney Rosemary Lehmberg.
In the same bill, lawmakers rejected a proposal to post their campaign finance information online.
